The Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers (Indiana Council) operates as a professional trade association dedicated to representing the interests of 24 community-based mental health providers throughout the state. Member agencies provide a comprehensive array of health services, including adult, child, and adolescent behavioral health, addiction treatment, and additional programs designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals in their local communities. The Indiana Council is committed to advocating for and preserving the best interests of its member organizations through public policy advocacy, member services, education, and community relations.

As the primary legislative voice for its members concerning both state and federal issues, the Indiana Council plays a crucial role in directing and managing public policy initiatives. This encompasses securing and sustaining adequate behavioral health funding, formulating legislative and administrative recommendations regarding the provision of behavioral health services, and ensuring that Community-based Mental Health Centers (CMHC) remain the primary providers for those requiring such services. The organization effectively leverages its relationships with legislative bodies, various public health associations, and other stakeholders to represent its members' interests proficiently.

Beyond advocacy efforts, the Indiana Council provides its member agencies with professional development opportunities and practical business support. Established in 1976, the Indiana Council is strategically headquartered in Indianapolis, close to the state capital. The organization benefits from a knowledgeable staff experienced in government affairs, member relations, community engagement, and business administration. Operating as a 501 (C)(6) entity, the Indiana Council is governed by a board of directors comprising representatives from its diverse member agencies. Membership is exclusively reserved for organizations that are certified as a CMHC through the approval process managed by the Family and Social Services Agencies’ Division of Mental Health and Addiction.
